WIPO Global Awards 2024: applications open

World Intellectual Property Organization launched the third edition of the awards with the aim of highlighting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Start-Ups on a global scale that make intelligent use of their intellectual property rights.

On January 15th, 2024, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) launched the third edition of the WIPO Global Awards, with the aim of highlighting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Start-Ups on a global scale that make intelligent use of their intellectual property (IP) rights, such as copyright, trademarks, patents, designs, geographical indications, among others, with the following objectives:

– Transforming Intellectual Property (IP) assets into profitable business solutions;

– Utilizing IP for business growth;

– Providing commercial solutions with an impact on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Applications can be submitted until March 31st, 2024. The announcement of the finalists will take place during the second week of May 2024; the winners will be selected and notified privately by the end of May 2024 and the awards ceremony for the public announcement of the winners and special events in Geneva will take place in the second week of July 2024.

The innovative and creative activities of companies will be highlighted with the awards and creators, inventors and designers being recognized for their efficient use of IP rights in the context of their business goals, while at the same time benefiting society through the increase in innovative and creative goods and services made available on the market.

As a novelty in this third edition of the WIPO Global Awards, Start-Ups are being given the opportunity to apply, giving due recognition to the use of IP from the outset as a means of leveraging their businesses.

Winners are invited to attend the awards ceremony and other networking events in Geneva, Switzerland, with travel expenses fully covered.

Finalists and winners also receive international promotion, recognition and visibility through various platforms and a personalized mentoring program for commercializing Intellectual Property.

SMEs wishing to apply must be registered in one of the 193 member states that are part of WIPO, employ up to 300 people, have total annual sales of up to 15 million US dollars, hold at least one registered intellectual property right and export their goods or services to at least one country.

Start-Ups wishing to apply must have been registered for less than three years in one of the 193 member states that are part of WIPO, employ up to 50 people, have an innovative good or service associated with IP rights, have filed at least one application for registration of an IP right and/or be the holder of at least one registered IP right, be associated with a business support organization such as an incubator, accelerator or similar entity, have confirmed their commitment to at least one commercial customer and/or have concluded a sale and/or secured an investor.
