US and Europe tackle transshipment of illicit health products

Articles 17/11/2022

The US and the EU are combining efforts and implementing new measures to fight the transshipment of illicit health products. Both are trying to coordinate the activities of specialized authorities to stop the increasing number of illicit medicinal products currently reaching the US.

Medicinal products that treat different diseases are counterfeited, shipped from their country of origin, and transshipped along the journey.

Criminal actors transship illicit health products in EU countries, “restarting” the journey of these medicinal products, which appear to be exported from Europe. Identifying the real manufacturer of these counterfeited products, which are often mislabelled, acquired from uncertified sources, and transported in illegal storing conditions, becomes arduous.

This initiative aims to stop criminal organizations from executing their unlawful activities throughout Europe and the US ports.
