“The proposals presented are balanced and feasible”

Tiago Caiado Guerreiro, head of the Tax and Social Security Department at Caiado Guerreiro, was invited by the ECO newspaper to comment on the proposal put forward by the PSD to lower the IRS. If approved, it will represent a tax relief of 1.2 billion euros.

With tax cuts at the centre of the political debate in Portugal, the Liberal Initiative and the PSD have recently presented a set of proposals to ease the tax burden in terms of personal income tax (IRS).

Contacted by the ECO newspaper to comment on the Social Democrats’ measures – which, if approved, will represent a tax relief of 1.2 billion – Tiago Caiado Guerreiro, head of the firm’s Tax and Social Security Department, explains that “the proposals presented are balanced and feasible” and reinforces: “We have an extremely high IRS on people”.

For the tax expert, updating the IRS at the inflation rate, another of the PSD’s proposals, “is a question of justice: by not updating, they are increasing taxes”. He argues that “the figures are reasonable, there is room in the budget”, and “they could have gone further”.
