“People won’t be able to meet their normal living expenses”

With the government’s proposal to increase the national minimum wage to 810 euros in 2024, people receiving this income may start paying Personal income tax (IRS). To prevent this, the calculation must be updated in line with the new value.

Tiago Caiado Guerreiro, Lawyer and Head of the Tax and Social Security Department, was invited by SIC television channel to comment on this issue. The lawyer explains that with the increase in the value of “foodstuffs, fuel and rents” when paying Personal income tax (IRS), people on the national minimum wage “end up in a worse situation” and “won’t be able to meet their normal living expenses”. He adds that it is necessary for “the government to create a mechanism that makes these people exempt” from paying Personal income tax (IRS).
